'Dombey and Son,' originally serialized like many of Dickens's novels, follows the fortunes of a shipping firm owner, disappointed at the lack of a son to follow him in his footsteps. He initially rejects his daughter's love but eventually reconciles with her before his death. 'Dombey and Son' includes many familiar Dickensian themes, such as arranged marriages, child cruelty, betrayal and deceit, and relations between people from various British social classes. It was published in 1848 after its serialization. Illustrations by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz").

Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812 - 1870) was an English novelist and social critic who created some of the world's most colorful and best-known fictional characters, creating the term "Dickensian" for colorful characters and themes he visited frequently. He is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during and after his lifetime and his novels and short stories and other writings remain popular today.
