Alfred
Benjamin James Fackrell was born in Rotherhithe, London 14th August 1877 a
Fitter's Apprentice.
He
joined the Royal Navy at Boscawen as
Boy 2nd Class 12th July 1893. Rated Ordinary Seaman 14th August 1895.
Able
Seaman 1st August 1896 aboard HMS Pigeon, a gun boat of the pygmy class.
He
was advanced to Leading Seaman at Vivid 27th
July 1898.
Petty
Officer 2nd Class 1st June 1900 and 1st Class 20th February 1902 aboard HMS Goliath*, serving
in the Third China War of 1900 aboard this ship. (China Medal no clasp). *HMS Goliath was sunk on the 15th Sept 1915 by a Turkish
torpedo boat ‘Muavenet’ at Cape Helles with the loss of 570 lives.
Transferring
to HM Coast Guard as Boatman 9th December 1905, he was advanced to Leading
Boatman 1st July 1913 serving in Northern Ireland, Morris Castle, Walton Creek,
Clacton on Sea, and Dover Castle Coast Guard Stations, demobilised 16th June
1919.
Long
Service and Good Conduct Medal awarded 9th January 1912, he died in Hendon in
1955
