POLIA PILLIN ART POTTERY ~ 2 HORSES ~ VASE

Material: Pottery

Size:  7-inch tall x 3.5-inch wide at widest area

Base: “Pillin”

This Polia Pillin mid-century Vase with 2 Horses is in really nice original condition, but there is one small 1/4” chip on the lip at the top. There are no other chips, cracks or flaws. It is very nicely painted and glazed. The 2 horses entwined heads and necks, seem to be making a heart shape.

According to Wikipedia: Polia Pillin, was a Polish-American ceramist during the 20th century. Born in Częstochowa, Poland, in 1909, she immigrated to the United States in 1924 and settled in Chicago, Illinois. In 1927, she met and married Ukrainian immigrant William Pillin. They lived near Albuquerque, NM, from 1936-1940; Chicago from 1940-1948; and finally Los Angeles, CA, from 1946 until their deaths (William in 1985, Polia on July 25, 1992).

Polia used engobe and glaze techniques to create mid-century motifs painted onto hand-thrown pottery such as pots, vases, plates, bowls, etc., with the majority of subjects involving women, horses, cats, fishes, and other animals. She produced most of her work from her home studio, called the Pillin Art Pottery Company, which was set up in the family's garage in Los Angeles.

I bought this vase in the 1970s at a Santa Barbara gallery. It has been on my shelf ever since. This is a really nice Polia Pillin Vase. It will make a great addition to your decorative arts or pottery collection.
