The Southern Chinese Peacock Papilio dialis is a Swallowtail butterfly, native to China, Hainan, Taiwan and Burma.
The wingspan is about 10 – 11 cm. This butterfly is a member of the family PAPILIONIDAE. Papilio dialis is black. At the hind wings there is a chain of purple spots.
Description
The fore wings are black. At the outer edge there are many brown stripes. One part of the wing is spotted by green scales.
The underside of Papilio dialis is brown. The veins are dark-brown.
The hind wings of Papilio dialis are black and they have tails. The edge is wavy. The whole wing is spotted by green scales. At the edge there is a chain of purple spots.
The underside is dark-brown. The inner half of the wing is spotted by whitish scales. At the edge there is a chain of red spots.
The body (abdomen) is black. The thorax and the head are also black. The upside of all parts is spotted by green scales.
Sex differences: The basic colour of the female is dark-brown. At the upside of the hind wings there is a small blue area.
Distribution
Papilio dialis is a butterfly from the Australasia / Indomalaya (Australia) ecozone. You can observe this butterfly from Myanmar until Taiwan.
