This pamphlet is the first Chinook Jargon Dictionary to be printed in the newly created province of British Columbia (BC joined Confederation July 20, 1871) and is also the first publication by N. Hibben & Co., of a Dictionary wholly dedicated to the Chinook - English / English - Chinook languages. Cover title reads "A Dictionary of the Chinook Jargon, or Indian Trade Language, of the North Pacific Coast". String bound printed paper wraps, 8vo size (8.25 inches tall), pp. 29, [30 - blank], "The Lord's Prayer in Jargon" is at the foot of last the printed page, publisher ads on back cover. Volume is toned with soil and stains, a mild tideline damp stain to upper corner/fore-edge - not affecting legibility whatsoever, and some light creasing to upper corner. "Chinook Jargon (Chinuk Wawa or Chinook Wawa, also known simply as Chinook or Jargon) is a language originating as a pidgin trade language in the Pacific Northwest. It spread during the 19th century from the lower Columbia River, first to other areas in modern Oregon and Washington, then to British Columbia and parts of Alaska, Northern California, Idaho and Montana, sometimes taking on the characteristics of a creole language. It is partly descended from the Chinook language, upon which much of its vocabulary is based. Approximately 15 percent of its lexicon is French, and it also makes use of English loan words and those of other language systems. Its entire written form is in the Duployan shorthand developed by French priest Émile Duployé." wiki. Very Good.

This historical pamphlet represents a seminal piece of Indigenous British Columbia printing and publication history, of which, Pilling describes on p. 22 of his Bibliography of the Chinookan Languages as being "For the most part a reprint, with omissions, of George Gibbs' Dictionary of Chinook jargon." also, see Lowther 381, who concur with the Pilling pub. date of "[1871?]" . The next Hibben & Co., publication of the Chinook Dictionary was 1875, viz "There were at least twelve printings of this work between 1875 and 1906". A desirable copy, still in its unsophisticated, as-issued state.
