Gibson RD Standard Walnut 1977 Vintage Electric Guitar

This guitar is a commission sale  - if you have a high end guitar you are interested in selling, please contact us via our easy to find website - search: Sell Us Your Guitar.

Here for sale we have a Gibson RD Standard in Walnut finish. Made in the USA in 1977, this instrument was part of Gibson's rather short lived RD series, with 'RD' actually being an abbreviation of 'Research and Development'. The top of the line 'Artist' model was a collaboration with legendary synthesiser manufacturer Robert Moog which included an on-board compressor/expander circuit designed by Moog. The RD Standard for sale here featured standard electronics whilst retaining features like the rather unusual Maple construction and 25.5" scale length. These ultimately unsuccessful instruments represent a period of innovation in Gibson's long history.

This collectible and rare guitar features a set-neck construction comprising a Maple body and Maple neck, with a 22 fret Rosewood fingerboard. This guitar is fitted with Chrome hardware including a Gibson Nashville bridge and StopBar tailpiece and sealed tuning machines. A pair of Gibson series VII humbucking pickups are installed, and are wired to a 3-way toggle switch and independent volume and tone controls.

The Maple neck plays very well, with a profile that might be described as a Thin 'D' feeling comfortable in the hand and providing effortless playability in all registers. The 25.5" scale length is more typical of Fender guitars and offers greater string tension and improved intonation, whilst the traditional Gibson 12" fingerboard radius provides a nicely flat and consistent playing surface right the way up the register and helps to retain the character you expect from a Gibson. The Rosewood fingerboard itself feels very luxurious under the fingers, whilst the 'played-in' feel of the neck provides a sense of familiarity and authentic vintage vibe that is very inspiring in the hands. The offset body shape is incredibly well balanced on the shoulders, with generous contours and cutaways that enhance comfort as well as access to the upper frets.

The pair of Gibson series VII humbuckers installed in this instrument deliver a thick and full tone typical of Gibson guitars. The neck position is warm and round, offering all the smooth buttery tones that you could need for your lead lines and solos. The bridge position is of course brighter, allowing your rock rhythm tones to cut easily through any mix. The independent volume and tone controls feel nicely responsive and provide plenty of scope for getting the very best sound in any situation. This is your chance to own a very unique and collectible guitar that is in exceptional condition for a 47 year old instrument.

Luthier Report

Our ID: 106052427104

Weight: 9.8lbs

Serial: 72807058

Aesthetic Condition:

Headstock: Overall very good condition. The top corners of the headstock demonstrate light indentation which breaks through the finish. The front face displays light scratching, most notably above the truss rod cover. Two small indentations are present near the high E tuner which lightly break through the finish. A small indentation to the rear face between the B and G tuners can only be seen under direct light.

Neck: Overall very good condition. The rear of the neck shows light indentations behind the 7th fret and an area of scratching to the lacquer behind the 10th fret treble side which can be lightly felt in the playing position. Mild playwear in the form of light pitting can be seen to the fingerboard between the G & B strings from frets 1-8. This is not felt under the fingers and does not impact playability. Delamination of the lacquer is present at the joint between the neck and fingerboard, most notably in the upper register to both sides beyond the 12th fret.

Body: Overall very good condition. All aspects of the body show inconsistently scattered examples of light indentation and scratching. This is most notable to the bottom edge of the rear face where the wood is lightly exposed. Both sides of the lower bout show light scuffing or paint transfer markings at the edges, not visible from the front face. The pickguard shows scratching consistent with mild playwear. The rear face shows mild to moderate scratching consistent with buckle rash.

Condition of Frets:

The frets demonstrate light signs of use, not affecting playability. There is moderate material remaining for any light fret work the new owner may wish to perform.

Truss Rod: Fully functional. Truss rod tool not included.
