BOB MIZER : American Photography of the Male Nude 1940
1970, Vol VII
The
projected backgrounds and lavish hollywood gel backgrounds and staged roman greco kitschy props of Bob Mizer.
This volume is part of the series, which focuses on some of the pioneers of male nude
photography, featuring their groundbreaking contributions to the medium
of homoerotic art. From Lon of New York's stylized, classically posed
portraits to Dave Martin's wholesome, athletic young sports athletes and bay area every day men; Pat Milo of Los Angeles, Douglas Juleff of Detroit and Bruce Bellas of
Los Angeles' cavorting modelsThese books rescue an era of American
visual arts that has virtually been forgotten. Additional volumes are
devoted to the formal, carefully posed portraits of Al Urban and Lon Hanagan.
Volker Janssen’s gay physique photography
series of monographs. In 1979, Janssen founded his Berlin-based gallery
and publishing company, Janssen Verlag. Along with exhibiting new work
by local and international artists, Janssen sold erotic prints, artwork,
and reprints of classic gay fiction, before turning to photobooks. In
the mid-90s, Janssen moved to South Africa (while still keeping his
Berlin gallery open) to focus solely on publishing, beginning with this
beefcake series. (After WWII and throughout the 60s, muscle magazines,
ostensibly dedicated to physical fitness and bodybuilding, were utilized
to disseminate erotic imagery created by and for gay men while
circumventing obscenity laws.) Each volume focuses on an American gay
physique photography icon: Bruce of Los Angeles, famous for his campy,
irreverent beefcake style; Lon of New York, known for his classically
posed portraits; Dave Martin, San Francisco's first photographer to
specialize in male nude physique photos; the relatively unknown Douglas
of Detroit, involved in a censorship battle that destroyed his career in
the 1950s; SoCal photographer Pat Milo whose style was exceptionally
more explcit than his contemporaries; Al Urban, considered the "dean" of
male physique photography by H. Lynn Womack’s MANual; and the
influential Bob Mizer, founder of the Athletic Model Guild (AMG),
physique pictorial.
Each volume contains a short biography of
the featured artist. Profusely illustrated with color and
black-and-white plates.

The seeds of the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation were planted
in 1968 when Fritz Lohman and Charles Leslie held a gallery show of
gay erotic art in their Soho loft. In 1990 they became a foundation
dedicated to preserving art which many in the art world used to
destroy. Ed Cervone "Three Sailor's". Or perhaps Patrick Angus'
Hanky Panky - set in an adult peep show movie house. Darold Perkins has taken an
Arrow Shirt ad and turned it into an ad instead. Next in the Drawings
and Prints category we particularly love Paul Cadmus; the explicit
Andy Warhol drawings -- he wasn't Tom of Finland.... but much more
than Campbell's Tomato Soup
We offer modern firsts, original
photography, the arts, and gay erotica. You will also find a fine
selection of signed copies, limited editions, and memorabilia because
the goal is to deepen the pleasure of collecting. (usps has raised rates approx 50% as has ebay managed payments, thus rates are net cost not profit)
