HISTORICAL CONTEXT :

France :

At the end of the 15th century, the first corps of musicians emerged. They march at the head of the troops in order to accompany them, transmit orders, but also distract the soldiers in camp. The instruments used are drums for giving commands, trumpets and timpani, and fifes (a wind instrument similar to a flute) for melodies. At the same time, war songs were composed for each campaign or battle.

At the end of the 19th century, the high costs of campaigning led to a reduction in the number of musicians. Moreover, the latter are no longer only hired for their musical skills, but are for example used as stretcher bearers. At the beginning of the 20th century, each group was made up of 38, then 58 musicians, with a conductor and a deputy conductor. The ringtone "Aux Morts" composed by Pierre Dupont was played for the first time at the Arc de Triomphe on July 14, 1931. The Republican Guard fanfare was created in 1934 and the Musique de l'Air in 1936.

Description :

Extremely rare, luxurious and superb French music conductor's sword, 19th century period, probably Louis Philippe (to be verified). The handle is in gilded bronze, with remains of gilding. It has floral reliefs (loosely inspired by the gendarmerie sword), complete fixed keyboard decorated with : '' harp and flutes '', surrounded by a laurel wreath, magnificent! The scabbard is made of white metal, suitable for a ring. The blade is very beautiful, in its juice, still shiny, with two central grooves, marked on the heel : '' B ÉPÉE '', superb! With a black fabric wrist strap (probably added later). A superb piece, very pleasant to hold in the hands and even more pleasant to observe in its collector's window, 100% original and rare.
