The USS Maine was sent to Havana in January 1898 to protect American interests during the ongoing Cuban revolt against the Spanish government. An explosion occurred aboard the USS Maine, and it subsequently sank. American public opinion was whipped into a frenzy by the media following the incident, for which a cause was never proven. Many Americans opposed a war based upon what they saw as American imperialistic efforts to annex Cuba. Nonetheless, on April 20th, the U.S. president signed a declaration of war on Spain, with an ultimatum calling for Cuban independence.
