Dickens has an important place in the intellectual history of Marxism. Indeed, Charles Dickens' work inspired Karl Marx who read the first editions while writing Das Kapital in London. The influence was well known by Soviet statists who saw to it that all Charles Dickens novels found multiple translations, to the joy and edification of millions of Russian readers young and old.
