When Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941 ,he expected his Panzers to meet with little resistance. But the Wehrmacht had reckoned without the Russian T-34 tank. With its radical sloping armour, robust suspension and wide tracks, the T-34 was not only almost immune to German anti-tank weapons but could also negotiate ground impassable to other armoured vehicles. Its equipment and crew facilities may have been primitive, but its powerful 76.2-millimetre gun was not. The T-34 was a triumph of tank design: it was easy to mass-manufacture and extremely reliable on the battlefield. As it evolved throughout the war it was always a match for its opponents: the T-34/85 had a lethal 85-millimetre gun that was more than a match for the German Panthers and Tigers. The T-34 played a crucial part at Stalingrad, Kursk and in every major battle on the Eastern Front. After the Second World War, it remained in service with the Soviet and the Warsaw Pact armies and fought in both Korea and Vietnam. As late as the 1980's it was still being used in fierce local conflicts in Angola and elsewhere. This CD takes you as close as you'll get to the Commander's seat of a T-34 in action!
