Sea Glass

Ultraviolet light reacts with the "Selenium Ruby" sea glass.  Selenium and Cadmium Sulfide were used to make red glass starting in the 1890s and is famous for manufacturing red railroad and traffic signal lights.

In a time before the EPA, a mainlander municipal dump was regularly burned and bulldozed into the Atlantic ocean. The Barrier Islanders also burned their trash and dumped the remains into the sea. Unthinkable today, but a treasure from the past brought ashore. The islands and the coasts are littered with these relics from a bygone era. Often after a thunderstorm or a hurricane these beauties wash up for beachcombers to find.
