Browne's work had influence on writers Bret Harte and Mark Twain. With a semester of medical school, Browne signed on to a whaling ship and published his art, earning him a reputation as a writer and artist. Traveling to California for the Gold Rush, he held several government jobs and wrote about his experiences in this delightful book, presented here in its first edition.
