Smith Gun 3-inch - British 76 mm anti-tank gun from World War II. It entered service in 1940. Its own weight in the stowed position reached 275 kg, and the length of the barrel was approximately 140 centimeters. The maximum range theoretically reached 1500 m, but the effective firing range did not exceed 250-270 meters.
The 3-inch Smith Gun (anti-tank gun) was developed primarily for the needs of the British Home Guard as a backup weapon against German tanks. When designing it, the emphasis was placed primarily on the possibility of the fastest possible implementation into production and the lowest production costs. The gun entered production in 1941, but turned out to be a very unsuccessful weapon. First of all, it had a very short effective firing range, and its ability to penetrate the armor of German tanks was also questionable. Another problem was the relatively heavy weight for an anti-tank gun. and very low operational ergonomics. It was finally taken out of service in 1945.
