Exceptionally rare estate find:  14 12" 78rpm Series FF V-Discs from 1946 in original War Department shipping box, addressed to the USS Spangenberg, hull number DE-233 with the envelope containing 100 V-disc needles.  This set picks up numbering where the EE Series set stopped, so the first record should be #621, but that record is missing from the box.  See the pics for the packing slip with record numbers, titles and artists.  It is possible that #621 remained on the ship's turntable when she was decommissioned in 1947, shortly after the set would have been received. And in that case it is very possible that the remaining records, #s 622 - 635, are unplayed.  All records (vinylite) are in excellent condition and in the original brown sleeves; their condition and lack of spindle-wear supports the possibility of their having never been played.  It is important to note that the V-disc promotional program, begun in 1943, was intended as a morale booster for the troops during WWII.  The recordings are all original performances, even if the material were recorded previously, and include greetings and well-wishes from the artists. The records were to be destroyed once the war was over and very few have survived.  And of the V-disc sales I've seen, this 600 #d series has not been represented.

The USS Spangenberg was named for Kenneth Spangenberg, a native of Allentown PA, who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his bravery and fortitude aboard the USS San Francisco earlier in the war.  The Spangenberg was decommissioned in 1947 and was scrapped out of the Philadelphia Shipyard in 1965, so there is a strong Pennsylvania connection. Out of respect to all of those who have served and defended our nation, 10% of the sale price will be donated to the Wounded Warriors project.

The complete EE Series set is listed separately.
