This restrike was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2002, from actual Gold ingots assayed by Justh & Hunter in 1857. These historical ingots were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Central America in 1987 by the Columbus-America Discovery Group.

The S.S. Central America is the most famous shipwreck in U.S. history. Known as “The Ship of Gold,” the SSCA was a sidewheel steamer that sank during a hurricane in September of 1857 off the coast of Carolina. The ship had been carrying nine tons of gold from the goldfields of California causing panic on Wall Street.

This fascinating and highly collectible gold piece is one of only 4,006 relic restrikes made from Justh & Hunter Assay company gold bars recovered from the wreck. The $10 Horseman shows an image of a cowboy on horseback and is one of the preeminent coins of the California Gold Rush era.

These magnificent pieces carry a date of 1857/0 on the obverse and 2002 on the reverse. Master sculptors painstakingly used the original engraving techniques from 165 years ago, including hand-held chisels, to recreate the intricate design of the original coin.

We off this interesting numismatic treasure in Gem Proof condition by NGC and individually hand signed by Anna Escobedo Cabral, 42nd Treasurer of the United States.

Justh & Hunter

Emanuel Justh and Solomon Hunter formed an assaying partnership in San Francisco in 1855.

Justh was a former lithographer and the San Francisco Mint and Hunter was an assistant assayer at the San Francisco Mint. Their assay bars are some of the most valuable treasures

recovered from the SSCA.

Baldwin & Co

Because of the California gold rush prospectors, gamblers, storekeepers and settlers were pouring into mining towns of California. Coins were in scarce supply. Baldwin & Company founded in 1850 was one of a small number of firms striking private issue Gold coins to solve the problem.

Initially, watchmakers and jewelers, Baldwin became prominent assayers, refiners, and coiners. The company produced a significant amount of $5, $10, and $20 territorial gold coins during those early years of the Gold Rush. The $10 Gold Horseman by Albert Kuhner features a Spanish Vaquero (cowboy) on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse that was one of the most preeminent coins of that time.
