Handy Tips for Replacing Britains BMW Motorcycle Handlebars

The Britains German Army BMW Motorcycle comes essentially in 3 parts:

1. The Handlebars piece

2. The Nose (the piece consisting of the front Lamp/Forks/Mudguard which I refer to as the NOSE)

3. The main body of the motorcycle with petrol tank, engine, rear wheel, etc.

The handlebars were actually released by Britains in two size/fit variants. When put together they look identical but one type handlebar piece has a thinner stem and the nose that goes with it has a thinner recess for it.

This is not a big issue regardless. The handlebars I sell are the other variant: Wider/more bulky in the stem area that connects to the nose.

All this means is that you may be required to do a bit of extra filing/shaving to the metal to make it fit. Check the fit of all the 3 pieces together as you need to ensure they all fit together nicely before any glueing or applying pressure.

BUT the first thing you need to do before you can adjust the new handlebars to fit your existing motorcycle nose is to REMOVE THE OLD / BROKEN HANDLEBARS...

This, from experience, ranges from very easy through to almost impossible but I have never failed yet. My tips to remove the old ones is to break off the remaining arms/handles of the handlebars piece so that you get full access to and leverage of it. While holding the motorcycle (and being extra careful not to ever damage the delicate wheel forks) take a decent pair of pliers and gently but firmly clasp the handlebars piece from side to side and waggle it with firm upward thrusts. It may come loose without much trouble. It may take more time as they are sometimes more fixed/stuff.

Eventually they will come loose and you’ll be able to separate the motorcycle into those 3 separate pieces. If this still isn’t the case - the last resort is to gently remove the wheel from the forks (by carefully levering/easing them apart until the wheel comes free). You can then drill up into the circular peg that connects the nose and the handlebars piece from inside the mudguard. That will certainly help on the toughest ones.

HOPEFULLY NOT NEEDED.

Now the motorcycle is in its three parts - you will need to connect the three pieces together having adjusted/files the repro handlebars set to fit. A small amount of superglue will be needed in the appropriate point of contact inside the nose. Line everything up and apply pressure to hold them all in place until you can release, let dry and later ensure it still allows turning and has stayed glued/fixed.

All that is left to do is paint to finish.

HALF THE TIME THIS PROCESS CAN TAKE ME 15 MINUTES. THE REST TAKE MORE DEPENDING ON HOW STUBBORN THEY ARE.
