Unavailable for decades, the famous sound recordings of the late O. Winston Link live again, now on compact disc. In addition to his magnificent photographs, O. Winston Link also produced extraordinary audio recordings of trains in action.

Recently the Library of Congress announced that 50 special sounds, covering almost a century, were being added to the Library’s Collection. Link’s sound recordings as presented here, are part of this select group.

Long unavailable, O. Winston Link’s “Sounds of Steam Railroading, Volumes 1-6” has been reasserted and digitally restored. The five CD collector’s box set compiles the originally released material from the five albums and one 45rpm, making them available for the first time on compact disc. The box set includes Volume 1 (1957), The Fading Giant (1957), Thunder on Blue Ridge (1958), 2nd Pigeon and the Mockingbird (1961), The General (1962, a 45rpm), and Mainline to Panther (1977). Each disc includes a 28 page booklet featuring the original liner notes and many photos, some previously unpublished. Each five disc set is housed in a handsome set that fits easily on your CD shelves.

Because the master tapes were unavailable and the original records and field tapes are 30-50 years old, the painstaking restoration process involved more than 5,000 hours to complete. Now Link’s N&W steam sounds can once again roar through your home.

This historic series, a discriminating collection of sounds of mixed and mainline trains pulled by steam locomotives on the Norfolk and Western Railway; were recorded by the late O. Winston Link in the twilight of the steam era. These sounds were captured trackside and behind the tender of the world’s finest steam locomotives.
