Item Description

"The Falcon" was created by Michael Arlen in "Gay Falcon", a 1940 story that was turned into an RKO movie series. The first films followed Arlen's story in that the hero was named Gay Lawrence (played by George Sanders). Lawrence used his "Falcon" identity in his dealings with the underworld. Sanders decided not to reprise his role and the character was killed-off in "The Falcon's Brother," the 1942 RKO film. At this point, "The Falcon's" brother, played by Sanders' brother, Tom Conway, took over.

"The Falcon" on radio began on the American Blue Network in April 1943, and aired on different radio networks for the next ten years. On radio, Falcon's transition into a private eye was completed, with "The Falcon", now called Michael Waring working as a hardboiled insurance investigator, with an office and a secretary named Nancy. Barry Kroeger was the first radio voice of the Falcon, followed by James Meighan, Les Tremayne, George Petrie, and Les Damon. Nearly all the shows were broadcast from New York.

Each show usually started out with a telephone call to "The Falcon" from a beautiful woman. Answering in his slightly British accent, he would reply to her and another adventure would follow. Waring was snappy and sarcastic with the incompetent police who were inevitably unable to solve the mysteries without his help. Like the films, the radio plots mixed danger, romance and comedy in equal parts.

The CDs are labeled and provided in a highly protective jewel case. A list of the programs on the disc as well as the date the program originally aired (if known) is also provided.

A note concerning sound quality. The sound quality for the shows in this collection is very good to good. It is difficult to find perfect recordings from the golden age of radio due to the equipment used for recording and the fact that many of the recordings were made 60, 70 or even 80 years ago.
