Fine performances of the concerto, adagio, and rondo, but for me the highlights of this album are the two fragments, which are left (more or less?) as Mozart wrote them, both movements ending in mid-phrase, which to me is a very haunting listening experience. (In other recordings, notably the Mozart Edition from Philips, the fragments have been completed by modern musicians/musicologists such as Robert Levin.) Both these fragments--one an aborted concerto for piano & violin with orchestra and the other a torso of a planned Sinfonia Concertante for string trio and orchestra, were written around the same time as the great Sinfonia Concertante for violin & viola (K. 364) and would have developed into masterpieces had Mozart gotten around to completing them. So jaded lovers of Mozart who are looking for a couple of his forgotten masterworks can perhaps find some unexpected joy here.

The Kantorow survey of Mozart's concertante works for violin is first class in every way. The soloist has a rich, singing tone and he is ably supported by Leopold Hager and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra (which brings plenty of torque to proceedings). In the Fourth Violin Concerto, Kantorow's double-stopping is exemplary in the final movement. Poetry abounds in the opening Allegro and the Andante Cantabile.
The real interest in this disc, however, lies in the two big fragments: the Concerto for Violin and Fortepiano in D Major (K.Anh. 56 [315f] - 120 bars, which is in draft score from the soloists' entry) and the Sinfonia Concertante in A Major for Violin, Viola and Cello( K.Anh 104 [K 320e] 134 bars, fully scored to the soloists' entry and then in draft score thereafter). They were both written as Mozart returned home from his disastrous trip to Paris in 1778 / 1779. The latter in particular could be likened to the Belvedere Torso in the Vatican: it is top draw Mozart and the equal - in the very least - of the famous Sinfonia Concertante, K 364. Mozart's failure to complete it will impair mankind in perpetuity. Alfred Einstein claimed that if Mozart had completed the Concerto for Violin and Fortepiano, it would have earnt the epithet Coronation long before the Mass or the Piano Concerto. K 315f has been subject of various bizarre attempts to complete it as a three movement work but the approach here works best: play it as it is and let it wind down into the silence.
This is a great disc even if it invites madness: goddamit, Mozart hung onto the manuscripts and they accompanied him to Vienna so why didn't he finish them? On Judgement Day, it will be held against him.
Ephemeral creatures that we are, K 315f and K 320e warn us that time waits for no man, not even "a Miracle that God allowed to be born in Salzburg."
