SYMTOMS OF GEAR FAILURE:
1. The headlight motor runs for several seconds but does not open the headlight.
2. The headlight only opens partially or droops after it has opened.
3. The headlight opens and closes but the motor continues to run with a loud grinding noise.
Most headlight motors fail because of the plastic gears that GM put in these motors. The electrical part of the motor typically does not fail. I have also seen a lot of gear failures with the cheap undersized aftermarket plastic gears sold by others.
HARD ANODIZED ALUMINUM IS THE BEST CHOICE! Here's why:
Unlike other low-quality plastic and brass kits, this kit contains all of the parts and lubricants needed to do it right the first time! This aluminum gear kit will last the lifetime of your car so you will never need to rebuild again due to a bad gear. This heavy-duty CNC machined aluminum gear will never break or sheer teeth like the OEM plastic gears, and even lower quality aftermarket plastic gears being sold, and they will not bind up your motor like some of the low-quality brass and aluminum gears sold by others. Unlike brass, this aluminum gear weighs only one ounce which is very close to the weight of the original plastic gear and the OE design specifications.
If you have a 2000 Corvette read this: Some very early production 2000 model year Corvettes were built with the 1997-1999 style headlight and motor assemblies. The motors in these assemblies are different and do not interchange even though they use the same gears inside. See the pictures above to compare. The 2000-2004 style motors have a plastic gear case and a rubber boot over the top of the motor.
If you need the repair kit for the 2000-2004 Corvette or prefer a brass gear kit or other hard to find headlight related parts, then please see my visit my eBay store at the following link and select the category for Corvette.
