Use

  - Nagura are prep/correcting stones used with full-size sharpening stones (whetstones) to assist in sharpening knives, razors, chisels, planes, and other blades.

  - Nagura are used to: 1) create a sharpening slurry/paste on the working surface of whetsones, 2) clean glazed/"clogged" whetstones from trapped metal micro shavings and swarf, which inhibit sharpening, and 3) flatten the working surface which becomes convex (dished) with use.

  - By creating a cutting slurry, nagura aid in a uniform, better controlled sharpening movement by eliminating suction between the blade and the stone and resulting skipping action which can lead to deformed, micro chipped bevels.

  - Nagura also help to break down grit particles of the host stone into smaller, finer size elements.

Like waterstones, naguras come in various grades of grit with a higher number denoting smaller particles and finer finish: ultra coarse: 120 - 240, coarse: 300 - 800, medium: 1000 - 3000, fine: 4000 - 7000, and ultra fine: 8000 - 12000. The grit range of waterstones and naguras should be matched - this will create homogeneous slurry, avoid contamination, and extend the life of waterstones and blades.
