Meditation (Serenity) Buddha: This pose promotes peace and calm.  The Buddha is depicted with both hands in the lap, face up.  The legs are crossed in Double Lotus pose.  An alms bowl sits in the lap.

Earth Touching (Calling the Earth to Witness) Pose:  In this pose the Buddha is on the verge of enlightenment.  As he meditates Mara, the Demon of Illusion, is tempting him and trying to induce fear.  The Buddha is touching the earth to call the Earth Goddess to witness his enlightenment and share the news of this accomplishment.  The legs are crossed with the left hand in the lap holding an alms bowl.  The right hand is extended and pointing to the ground.

Medicine Buddha: Tibetans hold that the Buddha is responsible for delivering the knowledge of medicine to the world.  This pose is beneficial to those seeking health.  The legs are crossed with the left hand in the lap holding a bowl of herbs.  The right hand is extended downward, with a herb plant next to the right arm.

Teaching Buddha: This pose depicts the Buddha’s first sermon after reaching enlightenment.  The pose is appropriate for those studying or interested in spirituality.  The legs are crossed and both hands are chest level with the thumb and index finger forming a circle.  The left hand is is turned palm out.

Fasting Buddha: This pose depicts the Buddha during his six year period of intense meditation and fasting.  Soon after he realized that fasting would lead him to death rather than enlightenment.  The legs are crossed and both hands rest in the lap.  He is emaciated with his rib bones visible.
