This lot of historic first day covers is a collection of women on stamps.  From 1847 to 1933, only 4 U.S. stamps featured women, and the Postal Service was slow to honor the accomplishments of half of the population.  The 1954-65 Regular issue of stamps, with denominations from one-half cent to five dollars, featured only one woman (Susan B. Anthony on the 50-cent stamp) and the next series from 1965-78 showed only two.  However, momentum for women, at least in the philatelic sense, picked up during the 1960s, and during the last few decades more attention has been paid to women in American stamp issues.

This lot contains 24 first day covers of stamps featuring women and their accomplishments from 1948 to 1974.  It is a handsome lot; all are cacheted, though there will be some variance in cachets offered for the early (1948-56) covers in the collections.  Those eight earliest covers will have neatly typed or written addresses, while the rest are unaddressed.  From 1960 on, all the covers are unaddressed and cacheted by Artcraft.
