The Upper Room

Daily Devotional Guide

September - October  1959

 About 68 pages

The Upper Room, a Methodist publication with an interdenominational daily inspirational message, played a prominent role in AA history. Not only was it used during daily quiet times (prayer and meditation time) during the summer of 1935 in the Smith home when Bill Wilson lived with Dr. Bob and his family (Dr. Bob and the Good Old-Timers, AA conference-approved literature, pg. 71), but it also was given to many early members to serve as a core component of their daily prayer and meditation practice. Member Dorothy S. M. said, "Then there was that little nickel book The Upper Room. They figured we could afford a nickel for spiritual reading. They impressed on us that we had to read that absolutely every morning. There wasn't any well-equipped bathroom in AA that didn't have a copy. And if you didn't see it opened to the right day, you immediately began to suspect them (Dr. Bob and the Good Oldtimers, p 71)." Bill E. of Akron also remembers The Upper Room being furnished to the members in the early days (Dr. Bob and the Good Oldtimers, p 71).
