This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white new photo reproduction of a 1941 STERLING Dual Chain-Drive Model HCS265H owned by George Vang, Inc. of Pittsburgh, PA.

”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image. Laying the “SAMPLE” sheet over the photo for the scan, causes the eBay image to be slightly yellowed. Your photo reproduction will be pure black & white with no yellow cast.

DESCRIPTION:  This Sterling HCS265H Rock Truck appears in the Sterling Trucks Photo Archive series by Iconografix. A 672-ci 150-hp Cummins HB600 diesel engine powered this model, which was rated at 53,000 GVW. In this photo, the Sterling is hauling 20,000 yards of rock and earth under subcontract on the Loyalhanna Dam, a flood control project built in 1941. This Sterling was hauling 30 loads per 8 hours, using 10-12 gallons of diesel fuel per day, compared to gasoline powered trucks using 30 gallons per day. At the end of the haul was a short pitch of 18% grade, where the Sterling was said “to go right up a mountain.”

GEORGE VANG, INC.: Was a prominent Pittsburgh, PA area heavy contractor from the 1920 into the 1950s building highways, bridges, and dams. Vang built several early sections of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in 1939 using a pair of Sterling HCS225 rock trucks. George Vang lived on a 30 acre estate in Glenshaw, where he resided in a specially-built pullman car. George Van died in September 1943.

STERLING MOTOR TRUCKS: In July 1915 the Sterling Motor Truck Company was renamed from Sternberg for various reasons including the existence of strong anti-German sentiment coming with WWI. The Sternberg family had begun building trucks in 1907. The early trucks were the then-popular engine-under-the-seat design until 1915, with conventional styled trucks being introduced in 1914. Sterling Motors continued producing heavy duty trucks in Milwaukee from 1915-1952. Sterling annual production peaked in 1929 with 1577 trucks sold, struggled thru the Depression years with sales under 200, and by 1941 produced 400 trucks that year. Known primarily for staying with chain driven trucks much longer than any other producer in severe-service models, they also produced worm gear enclosed final drive models in smaller numbers, especially for the west coast market. Sterling was purchased by The White Motor Company in 1951, and rebadged as Sterling-Whites. Milwaukee production moved to Cleveland in 1953. With White’s acquisition of Autocar in 1953, and with Sterling-White only producing 250 trucks in 1952, White terminated Sterling-White production in 1953.
