The Shakyamuni (also called the Earth Touching or Calling the Earth to Witness) pose depicts the historical Buddha as he meditates and gains enlightenment. The right hand is placed on the knee facing downward, touching the earth. This mudra is commonly known as “earth witness” and represents the summoning of the earth goddess Sthavara to bear witness of Buddha’s attainment of enlightenment and defeat of the disruptions of the demon Mara. The left hand holds an alms bowl.
These statues are typical of the iconography from Tibet, Nepal and India. As the size of the statue increases, the detail becomes more fine. The resin casting is in heavy, solid material.
