Timeless Stitches TSA-501 "SLEEVE JOCKEYS AND CUFFS". This is a new, unused pattern in the original factory fold.

From the pattern:  "The ladies of the Era were well put together women, with each part of their outfit complimenting the rest.  The accessories were an intricate part of this overall appearance.  Fabric, color choice and trimming were chosen to accent the hands and face, and to add to the distinction of the outfit.

Every Godey's and Peterson's Magazines had new sleeve jockey styles for the women of the Era to copy.  Here is an example from March 1863 Peterson;s Magazine.  Under the heading-Fashions for March "There is a very pretty style of Under sleeve, which is both new and comfortable, it consists of a very deep tight cuff, reaching half-way up the arm, and fastened on the upper part of the arm by six or seven tiny gilt buttons.  These cuffs are sometimes embroidered round in a color and are attached to an ordinary full sleeve, of course shorter than usual, in consequence of the dept of the cuff."  here is a warm under sleeve from Godey's mainly used under paletots and other outerwear.  The instructions for this sleeve are included at the back of the pattern, just for fun.

An outfit could be readily changed with a small investment in material and time.  As the war progressed and fabric became expensive, more and more women resorted to "accessories" as methods of changing and updating the wardrobe.  Trims became harder and harder to obtain and afford, so more self-fabric trims and ruffles were used.  Many of the pictures of the Era show women dressed with jockeys and chemisettes decorated with what looks like bands of ribbon, this was often in fact bands of fabric stitched to the garment to represent ribbon.  A yard of fabric would go a long way to trim many a garment.  Time was the least expensive cost in a garment.  Women spent hours and hours on inexpensive trims and handwork to decorate their garments.  Besides being easy to launder, and less expensive than a whole garment, accessories like sleeve jockeys and chemisettes also have one other benefit, and to me this is the most important of all.  They are a lot cooler to wear than a complete body!!!"
