Sodalite (chlorinated sodium aluminum silicate), with the chemical formula Na8Al6Si6O24Cl2 or Na4Al3(SiO4)3Cl (depending on the authors, see external links) is one of the main constituents of blue lapis lazuli. It is frequently found in Brazil, China and Canada.
Although massive blocks of sodalite are opaque, the crystals are most often transparent or translucent.
Sodalite owes its name to the sodium it contains. Well known for its blue color, sodalite can also be gray, yellow, green, or pink. It is often mottled and covered with veins. Rarely, sodalite also contains pyrite, a common inclusion in lapis. On the other hand, it is distinguished from similar minerals by its white (or more rarely, blue) veins. The six directions of sodalite cleavage can be seen as incipient cracks running through the stone.
