Pink Rhodolite GARNET. IF-VVS1 (sold individually) Africa
N / A

The advantages of this product

Garnet refers to a family of minerals from the nesosilicate group crystallizing in the cubic crystal system. Gem quality garnets are fine stones.
Used alone, the term garnet is synonymous with pyrope-almandine.
A rock formed almost exclusively of garnet is called a garnetite.
Properties
Garnets are formed from three silicate groups associated with metal cations, with the general formula X32+Y23+[SiO4]3, where X and Y are ions charged with 2 and 3 positive charges respectively.
The structure consists of a three-dimensional network of octahedra and tetrahedra that share vertices: in the space between these polyhedra there are cavities in the shape of a triangular dodecahedron, in which the divalent cations with coordination 8 are placed. These cavities can be described as tetragonal antiprisms deformed in such a way that the vertices are no longer coplanar.
Depending on the presence or absence of calcium, two groups of garnets are distinguished:
calcium garnets or ougrandites (OUvarovite GRossular ANDradite);
aluminous garnets, or pyralspites (PYRope ALmandin SPessartite).
Ti occurs up to 1% in almandine and 5% in melanites, black varieties of andradite (we can even reach 20% Ti). Yttrium can occur in other garnets such as spessartines which can contain up to 5% Y2O3 or Zn.
The hardness of garnets (7-7.5) means that they are sometimes used in industry as abrasives (in particular the denser pyropes because they are formed under high pressure), but the harder corundum (9) is preferred.
Garnets are also studied by geologists as a geothermobarometer. They allow the temperature and/or pressure of formation of a rock to be determined. Geologists use this property to determine whether a rock has experienced the right pressure and temperature conditions to contain diamonds or oil.
Synthetic garnets are obtained at 500°C and 500 bars of water pressure, with pressurized water reducing the formation temperature.
Jewelry
Garnets are used in jewelry to make various pieces of jewelry.
