The ruby owes its name to its red color. It was not until around 1800 that it was attached, along with the sapphire, to the corundum group. The red color is not identical in all the rubies from the same deposit, so it does not make it possible to determine the origin of a stone. The most sought after of all the colors is called "pigeon's blood", pure red with a hint of blue. The color, often unevenly distributed in streaks or spots, is attributed to the presence of chromium, with a participation of iron for the brown tones. The less pleasant colors are improved by heat treatment. Raw ruby is often rolled, greasy in appearance; once cut, its brilliance is close to that of a diamond. Rubies and sapphires are the hardest minerals after diamonds.
Inclusions are very common. They do not determine the quality of the gem; they guarantee its authenticity of natural ruby compared to synthetic rubies.
