Afghanite, (Na,Ca,K)8[Al6Si6O24](SO4,Cl2,CO3)3 0.5H2O, is a hydrate of sodium, calcium, potassium, sulfate, chloride, carbonate of silico-aluminous minerals. Afghanite is a feldspathoid of the cancrinite group and commonly occurs with minerals of the sodalite group. It is blue to colorless, usually massive crystals in the hexagonal crystal system. It has a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6 and a specific gravity of 2.55 to 2.65. It has refractive index values of 1.523 and nω==1.529 nε. It has a perfect sense of cleavage and has a conchoidal fracture. It reacts a bright orange.
It was discovered in 1968 in the Lapis-lazuli mine, Sar-e-Sang, Badakhshan province, Afghanistan and takes its name from this country. It has also been described from localities in Germany, Italy, the Pamir Mountains, Tajikistan, near Lake Baikal in Siberia, New York and Newfoundland. It occurs as veinlets in lazulite crystals at Afghan site and weathered limestone xenoliths in pumice at Pitigliano, Tuscany, Italy.
