To service Nippon Denso starters fitted to many Land Rover Discovery & Defender TD5

.The Nippon Denso starter motor fitted to TD5 can be prone to failure and is very expensive to replace. The starter is very reliable apart from the copper contacts in the solenoid which wear away. 

It is any easy DIY job to replace the contacts once the starter is removed .

The usual symptoms with a contact failure is a clicking sound and intermittent starting. You may try 3 or 4 times and get a click click and on the next try the starter works as usual. 
The plunger contact rarely wears and can be easily cleaned with a soft wire brush or Wet & Dry paper - You are more likely to need the insulators than a plunger!
