Malachite is a carbonate mineral with the formula Cu2(CO3)(OH)2, monoclinic, space group P 21/a, which forms in the copper sulphide oxidation zone, often associated with azurite and native copper. Malachite can also be orange in color.
This stone is an intense and vibrant green color, almost always microcrystalline. When formed by oxidation of copper in air, it takes the name of verdigris. It can also be orange-red. It has a density of about 2.5 to 3 g/ml. It has a hardness of 3.5 to 4, which is quite fragile.
