This sleek little hat proves the fashion adage that understated elegance can make more of an impact than over-decoration.  

Made of a fine quality midnight blue (blue-black) velvet in a modified pillbox or saucer-shaped style, this 1950's vintage hat was intended to sit slightly away from the head held with the interior built-in headband, tilted at whatever angle was most becoming.  You will see this style of hat often in early 1950's fashion magazines, worn with a smart designer suit or tailored dress.

What gives this hat its elegant special quality is the beautifully crafted feather at the front -- decorated with just 3 well-placed rhinestones, the feather is shaped so that it sweeps up in a little curlicue on the right side, just enough to say "unique".  

Although there is no maker's tag on the interior, this hat was clearly made by a skilled professional milliner.   The interior of the hat is constructed of a silk faille type material on a stiffened milliner's foundation finished with grosgrain ribbon.  There is no netting on this hat.

This is a hat that would have been worn with a sleek, tailored early 1950's "New Look" suit or dress and a pair of simple but elegant pumps - classic, polished chic.  A great hat to add to your collection! 
 

Condition:  Very good vintage condition, with the exception of a couple of minor items: a few stitches have come loose on one section of the underside (not visible when worn), and a very small, approximately half-inch line of rubbing on the velvet crown.  The initials "BV" are marked on the inside crown, perhaps the owner's initials(?), but these are of course not visible from the outside. The delicate decorative feather is still in good condition, intact and still firmly attached. 

Size Details:  

The measurement of the interior grosgrain band is about 23 inches, however this hat is not intended to fit closely onto the head, but to be held "aloft" by the flexible headband.  Accordingly, I think it will fit just about any head size.
