Here are a few Tricks of the Trade:

Tools great for shaping polystyrene foam

  • 80 Grit Sandpaper
  • Wire Brush
  • Serrated Knife
  • Hot Wire
  • Heat Gun (gives the surface a cool rock texture)
  • Hot Knife
  • Rasp
  • Router
A few products that work great for coating polystyrene and can be found in most building supply stores are:
  • Stucco
  • Plaster of Paris
  • Latex Rubber
  • Drywall Mud
  • Polyurethane Coating (we will be offering this product soon)
  • Paper Mache
  • Elmer's Glue
  • Mod Podge

If you want a more "rock" like surface, a 50/50 (give or take) blend of a latex primer and plaster joint compound rolled on will get a real hard coating. Refrain from using aerosol or anything that contains high levels of VOC directly on polystyrene. Chemicals can break down/ dissolve polystyrene. Kilz® Max Water-Based Primer contains low VOC and makes a great primer when prepping your polystyrene surface for a coating. It will help strengthen the surface and will allow your hardcoating to adhere better.
