~ Exclusively from the Fashion Archaeologist ~

This is 'Edwardian Rose' antique sewing pattern (#1912-A-040) for an Edwardian/Titanic era walking suit (jacket & skirt) in a flattering cut with dramatic wide collar and contrast detail.

This pattern was developed directly from a French design of early 1912, but drafted in a multi-size format (see details below, and on pattern envelope in photo above).  The pattern includes full step-by-step instructions in English.  Scroll down to see all photos of the 3 sample suits made from this pattern.

(Please note this listing is for the sewing pattern only.  The  finished garments and hat used for display purposes are not included in this listing).

In 1912, this dressy suit would have been worn for visiting, travel, luncheons, outdoor promenades, etc., with gloves and a grand hat.

If you've been searching for a truly authentic walking suit to sew for an historic event or occasion, look no further!

Details:

This suit consists of a semi-fitted, lined jacket with long sleeves, and matching skirt.  The jacket is designed in a flattering "cutaway" style at front, with a slightly flared and higher back basque (peplum).  There is a dramatic, large contrast wing collar and matching cuffs, both trimmed with bands in a darker colour.

The skirt is cut in the fashionable "Empire" (high-waisted) style of 1912, with a columnar front panel, and somewhat fuller at back.  A contrast section at lower front matches the jacket.

As shown in the photos, different colours and fabrics can produce very different impressions in this suit.  The 3 suits shown (previously sold) are of cinnamon brown glencheck wool in size Medium, blue/oatmeal linen tweed in size Large, and a black and white wool blend windowpane weave in size Extra-Large.  The graceful cut of the jacket and columnar shape of the skirt make this walking suit a flattering design in the larger sizes.

Please note: This is a big pattern that consists of  THREE  large sheets -- because of the size and weight, shipping costs are higher than for our smaller patterns.

Skill level for this pattern (3.5/5):  Solid intermediate.  You should have good sewing skills, be familiar with common construction terms and techniques, and with the process of personal fitting of a garment during construction.  If you can make a basic modern ladies' lined suit, you'll find the skills involved in making this suit are very similar.

A complete sewing course!  This pattern is more than just a sewing pattern with a few pages of instructions.  It is a complete course on constructing a tailored Edwardian walking suit. Besides the 3 large pattern sheets, the package includes a 26-page booklet of step-by-step instructions in English, including cutting layout diagrams, guidelines on making alterations beyond the sizes and lengths printed on the pattern, and historical notes.  In addition, links are included to annotated photographs on our Web Gallery explaining points of construction.

Recommended Fabrics:  Solid coloured, checked or tweed suiting fabrics, such as gabardine, wool glen check or windowpane, suit-weight linens, silks or cottons.  This design is not suitable for printed, striped, or diagonal fabrics, nor for limp or flowing fabrics like velvet or crepes.  Small, regular checks or plaids will be easier to work with than larger designs, but extra yardage will be required to match all checked/plaid fabrics.  Yardage required (main fabric): For 152cm (60") fabric, 3.8 metres (4-1/2 yards).  For fabric 112-150cm (44" to 59") wide, 5.6m (6-1/4 yards).

Our 'Edwardian Rose' Patterns:  We take our patterns from the "bare bones" original antique designs (usually French), re-draw, correct, and clarify the outlines, add helpful markings, then write complete, detailed English instructions.

If you've ever tried to sew from an original antique pattern, you'll know that they can be a challenge at best and mystifying at worst, especially the "instructions", which were often no more than a few lines of text.

A great deal of time and skill goes into creating each of our patterns.  We've taken the hard work out of interpreting these fashions to make them as accessible as modern commercial sewing patterns.   To see what sets our 'Edwardian Rose' patterns apart from other antique patterns, click on "Store Pages" in the lower left navigation bar on our store Home page.

A NOTE ABOUT EDWARDIAN FIT:  As this design is taken directly from an antique original, intended for an evenly-proportioned figure of the era, the overall fit will be somewhat closer than in modern garments, with less wearing ease, especially through the upper arms, armscye, shoulders and neck. If your bust measurement is at or near the maximum for a particular size and/or you have a larger frame or heavier upper body, be aware that you may need to alter the pattern.

Guidelines are given in the sewing instructions for making moderate adjustments in fit and for altering the paper pattern as far as is possible for an antique design.
