This was purchased from the Philip Smith estate, in Hammond, OR,  when he passed on, a few years back. He was an amazing and very talented artist, well accomplished and very prolific. Being a free lance illustrator, he had contracts with well known publications and corporations, including Child Life, Humpty Dumpty, Playmate, Jack & Jill, Cricket, Young World, Health Explorer, Sesame Street, and also Columbia Records and New York Times, Hallmark, Boeing, Mc-Graw Hill, Scholastic Publications, and more. He Illustrated books by the well known author, Lawrence F. Lowery and was accepted to work at the Walt Disney Studio, but turned it down in favor of a less hectic lifestyle. This is a beautifully rendered charcoal pencil? illustration of three fantasy or sci-fi portraits (on illustration board?). It is approx. 13" x 15 1/2". This one has no signature that I can see, but many times book illustrations are not signed. I took a few of his illustrations to The Antiques Roadshow when it came to Portland, OR last August, and they loved looking at his work, but were stumped since there is no current auction record for his work. I predict that in time his talents will get the notice that they deserve and go up in value. They said a reasonable amount might be $100 each to start.
