ABOUT OX BLOOD GLAZE Ox blood red glaze was innovated from Ming Dynasty (from 1368-1644) in Jingdezhen, China. Becomes famous for several hundred years. The color red is caused by the ingredient of copper in the glaze. This glaze can form a beautiful red color after high temperature firing (usually at 1400℃).The surface of the glaze is smooth shinning, no cracking and semi-translucent. Sometimes, the gold, agate, jade, or coral powders added to the glaze in order to improve its coloring. This glaze is quite stable during the firing when comparing with other glazes. Therefore, the bottom part of the piece would not collect much of the falling glaze. And at the same time, the top opening would leave much less white area after fire. It is very difficult to achieve a good quality of ox blood red piece. The timing, temperature and the formula are the major factors to cause the low productivity. You can see a lot of broken pieces outside the factory. Those are the defected pieces which were destroyed. The successful rate would be about two pieces for every ten items. You would be surprised by its high costs.
