韩滉 Han Huang byname Taichong was a native of Chang'an (present-day Xi' an, Shaanxi Province) . A leading artist during the middle part of the Tang Dynasty (the eighth century), he made great achievement in painting and calligraphy. Excelled in cursive calligraphy, he learned the calligraphy of Zhang Xu and in painting, he learned from the fifth-century artist Lu Tanwei. He was a skilled painter of human figures and rural scene, with vivid presentation of animals.
Han Huang's painting is simple and unsophisticated. He is one of the noted Tang-dynasty artists. The Five Oxen is the earliest extant painting on paper. The paper made from hemp fibers was widely used during the Tang Dynasty. The Five Oxen in the painting, standing or walking, lowering the head or raising it, all look true to life and vivid. The only extant painting of Han Huang and one of the few Tang-dynasty paintings produced on paper, it possesses great artitic and historical value.
