Obverse side of the coin: Pha That Luang image. Pha That Luang is a gold-covered large Buddhist stupa in the centre of Vientiane, Laos. It is generally regarded as the most important national monument in Laos and a national symbol.

The Rat (子) is the first of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar. The Year of the Rat is associated with the Earthly Branch symbol 子.
