Calvin Richard Klein- Jewish immigrants. He studied at the Institute of Fashion and Technology in New York from 1959 to 1962; Later, in 2003, he received an honorary doctorate from the Institute. During his studies at the Institute he met Jane Center, they married in 1964 and had a daughter. Before working as a freelance designer, he worked for two years as an assistant to designer Dan Milstein, where he helped design men's suits.
In 1968 he founded the Calvin Klein fashion company, with his childhood friend Barry Schwartz; Klein was involved in design in the company, while Schwartz focused on managing her business. The company first sold women's jackets, later developed into sports clothing, and in the 1970s gained popularity and sold collections that included a wide range of women's clothing. During this period, Klein also launched his well-known jeans collections, and chose relatively innovative advertising methods - commercials of a sexual and practical nature. In 1982, he began to design and market men's underwear in an innovative way by turning men's underwear from a functional product into a fashionable and desirable product.
