Baseball Magazine - April, 1939 - Bobby Doerr of the Red Sox on the cover - 52 pages (with many great vintage black & white photos) - both cover and interior pages are in EXCELLENT condition. Baseball Magazine, the first monthly baseball magazine, was founded by Boston sportswriter Jake Morse in 1908 and continued publishing through 1957 (with a shortlived revival in the mid-1960s). Here's your chance to own a piece of baseball history; to go back in time to the Golden Age of baseball and read about events, not from a historical perspective, but as they were happening, told by the writers who were there at the time covering the game. In addition to the great coverage of our National Pastime, Baseball Magazine was cherished by baseball fans for the great full-page black & white portraits of players which appeared inside the front and back covers for most of its run. Many people cut them out and threw away the rest of the magazine. Because of this and the paper drives of World War I, World War II and continuing into the 1960s, issues of Baseball Magazine are becoming harder and harder to find in decent condition. This 1939 issue features Reds double no-hit pitcher Johnney Vander Meer inside the front cover andTommy Heinrich of the Yankees inside the back cover. Also in this issue are stories on intentional walks, the super 2nd basemen including Napoleon Lajoie, Rogers Hornsby, Frankie Frisch, Eddie Collins and others, Diamond Jims (pitchers without control), the love of the game, the ways to lose a game, official scoring, players with long tenure with one club, the problem of weight, child prodigies of the diamond, pitcher Howard Mills of the Browns, spirited spring training battles, 1939 AL and NL schedules, some great baseball cartoons and much more. There is only sone very minor edge wear (see the scan), but this nearly 80 year-old magazine is still in EXCELLENT condition. No collection of baseball publications or Bobby Doerr items is complete without this historic magazine. Check out the scan for the photo of Doerr being tagged out at the plate on the cover and also so you can judge the condition for yourself (the magazine in the photo is the one you will get).
