HISTORIC ESTLINE CREW UNIFORM BUTTON

Sporrong is one of the oldest companies in the Nordic region

The business was originally founded as a belt-maker’s in Stockholm back in 1666 by Henrik Grau, Master Craftsman. Following several changes of name and ownership, the business was taken over in 1842 by Carl Claes Sporrong, the last Master of the Belt-Makers’ Guild in Stockholm, who also gave the company its current name.

Sinking ot the Estline MS Estonia

MS Estonia sank in 1994 in the Baltic Sea in one of the worst maritime disasters of the 20th century. It is the the deadliest peacetime shipwreck to have occurred in European waters, with 852 lives lost, and it is the second-deadliest peacetime sinking of a European ship, after the RMS Titanic.

More than likely is that this item has been cruising numerous times onboard the ill-fated ship, as also probable on the other vessels of the company's few - as the crew has been moved around back an forth and their uniforms changed hands over the years.

I was born into the numismatic profession and worked for it full time the next 20 years, and I can easily say that in this case there is no doubt about the authenticity of this old particular period of time worn item (it is not a reproduction, neither a copy). I bought a one and only complete small collection of these that I have ever come by for sale (as seen here removed from the jackets), way back years and years before any kind of potential fakes would have started appearing on the market.
