Hand Printed Silk Fabric

In India, the Rajasthani village of Sanganer has been known for its block print textiles since the 18th century. Hand carved wooden blocks are dipped in dye and stamped onto the stretched cloth. This process must be repeated for each color in the printed pattern. The work is done in small, family-run studios.
Hand printed, Indian fabrics, "Les Indiennes," became popular in Europe and North America as early as the 17th century. Over the following centuries, the designs that developed reflected not only the Persian and Mughal artistic traditions of the Indian artisans but also the stylistic preferences of European taste-makers. The design of this piece (part of the tradition sometimes known as Palampore or Tree Of Life) is an excellent representation of that collaboration.
With their historic background, block print fabrics may be just what you need for your SCA, LARP, Renaissance Faire, Civil War, reenactor, or other reproduction, period costumes. Or use them for period home furnishings.

This fabric is brand new, not "vintage." In other words, it's not used, damaged, or dirty. It is, however, folk art. Because of the way it's produced, the pattern is not perfectly uniform and there may be some errant spots of dye. If your project needs greater precision, you'll be better off with machine printed textiles. |
