This is a superb antique rug which is 7' 9 X 3' 9 feet.

On a blue field, the central panel is completely dominated by the Herati flower repeated throughout the field.

It may be well to quote the ancient legend attached to the Herati pattern for this carpet.  In fact, an ancient Persian legend had it that the world was flat and reposed on the back of an enormous tortoise who held it elevated above the great depths.  In the water that surrounds the earth, two enormous fish chase each other; it is the speed of their movements that turns the earth, bringing day and night, the change of seasons and other terestrial phenomenons.  Since this country is a land of earthquakes, this strengthened the belief in this old legend.  If the two fishes caught each other, or if the tortoise were to move, this would be the end of the world.

The main border is with flowers.

The rug has wear and spots with wear on the pile.  Two repairs on a border shown on close-up #7. Small repair on a corner.
