First edition of the first Bible printed in the state of Connecticut, thick foolscap 8vo (sheets 6½” x 4 1/8”), without pagination, “The end of the New Testament” last line on recto of the final leaf; “Finis” at the end of the “Table of Order and Conditions of Men” on the verso of the final leaf.

Original old full sheep, back in four blind fillet separated compartments.

Hills, The English Bible in America 168, “This is the first Bible printed in the state of Connecticut and was referred to by the publishers as the ‘School Bible’”, p. 29. Announced in the Connecticut Courant as “…this day completed the first edition of the School Bible” on October 18, 1809. WorldCat locates 14 copies worldwide. H8246.

Good in original full sheep with strong joints, back including head-caps intact. Corners worn & rounded. Sheets age toned with some stains, browning & a few short closed tears. The third sheet of the New Testament with tear (1¼” x 2¾”piece lost affecting text & fore edge margin), otherwise complete & unmarked. The second front blank inscribed in old sepia ink: “Nancy Lambert’s/ book bought/ January/ Nancy Lambert was born/November 14th 1795 Wednesday”.
