- The Heart Sutra, a shortened term of the Maha Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra: It is the shortest of the forty Prajna- paramita Sutras (only 260 Chinese characters), which, with the Diamond Sutra, stresses emptiness. Maha means great, Prajna means wisdom, and paramita means "going beyond" or perfection.
It is chanted in every Mahayana and Seon monastery in the world. It is commonly chanted at the beginning of a Dharma talk, or at the end of prayer chanting and formal Buddhist ceremonies.
