This beautiful  Stromatolite   of PreCambrian age is from the Australia.(Formed in shallow water by trapping, binding and cementing fine grains with cynobacteria. These stromatolites have been replaced by the heavy iron material "Goethite" against the coffee-coloured mudstone matrix.) It has been polished on one side.

stromatolite is the oldest of all fossils. The banding that commonly appears in stromatolite is a record of the growth patterns of colonies of microorganisms, principally photosynthetic cyanobacteria, but also other Eubacteria and the Archaeans. The colors that are often expressed are the result of the interaction of biological and sedimentary processes, together with subsequent chemistry and mineral exchange.
