Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez was a conspirator and supporter of the Mexican War of Independence from Spain (1810-1821).
She is frequently referred to as La Corregidora. The meetings in Doña Josefa's house became central to the conspiracy, and much of the insurgent planning (if not all) was done there. She even supported the insurgents financially.
Eventually the role Doña Josefa played in the Mexican conspiracy against Spain, was uncovered, and she was imprisoned in a monastery until her release in 1817. She continued her involvement with several liberal groups, some of them radical in nature until her death in 1829.
